School Policies & Daily Schedule

Oak Hill Elementary Attendance Policy

The faculty and administration of Oak Hill Elementary encourage all students to attend school  regularly and be punctual.   If a student must be absent, he/she shall accept the responsibility of turning in an excuse and asking the teacher what work needs to be made up.  The student will have a reasonable amount of time (three school days) in which to bring a valid documented excuse.  Students leaving school early shall have their absences excused only for reasons designated in this policy as excused.  Notes are to contain the following information: Student's name, grade level, and first period teacher; date of absence (s), reason, and phone number of parent/guardian.  Absences for reasons other than those listed below will be unexcused and the student will not be allowed to make up any work.  Three unexcused absences during the school year will be referred to the District Truant Officer and Family Court.

1. Student is sick and has a note from parent (limit two days per note except for infectious or contagious disease.  Two notes per grading period).
2. Student is sick for three or more consecutive days and has a doctor's statement/hospital slip.  For chronic illnesses, one doctor's statement should be sufficient.
3. Medical or dental appointments that cannot be made after school hours.  (Verification by a slip from the  doctor confirming the date and time).
4. Serious illness in immediate household.
5.  Order of count with proper verification from court.
6. Death in immediate family. (Limit three days except extenuating circumstances).
7. Attendance at a funeral of a close friend or relative.
8. Natural disaster beyond control of student.
9. School sponsored trips are not absences as they relate to the Attendance Policy.  Students participating in such trips are required to do work missed while out.
10. Documented religious holidays or activities.
11. One day attendance at the Kentucky State  Fair.  (Must have prior approval by principal).
12. Other valid reasons as determined by the principal.

It is desirable that every student be in their designated classroom five minutes prior to the beginning of school.  If a student is not in his/her classroom at 8:20, they are considered tardy.  A parent/guardian must come into the office tan sign in any student that is late/tardy.  Nine tardies can be referred to the court.  For a tardy to be excused the parent must present a doctor's excuse or a court appearance statement.  Students who  are tardy because of illness without a doctor's  statement will be limited to two excused tardies per grading period.

Oak Hill Elementary Homework Policy

Many assignments require study and research outside of class.  Individual study is essential if students are to better understand the subjects they are studying.  Homework provides the student with the opportunities to increase his/her knowledge, helps the student become more aware of personal responsibilities, discipline, and work habits; provides help in needed skills and leads to proficiency in the subjects being studied.  Assigned homework must be completed.   Grades will be affected, and in-school detention may result if assignments are not completed.  Since students work at different rates, it is difficult to prescribe homework in a set amount of time, although each student should have a minimum of twenty minutes to one and a half hours of homework per night if necessary.  Assignments will vary from class to class.  Some assignments will be due the next day, and some will need to be completed over a determined period of time.  No homework will be assigned at any grade level without prior classroom instruction.  Teachers will write homework assignments on the board each day.  If the student misses a class, it will be his/her responsibility to visit the classroom during the day to get the assignments.

All students in grades four and five must use their Assignment Books/Sheets to record their homework assignments.  This will help to keep work organized and current.  Parents are encouraged to look at this daily and to sign to indicate that they are aware of students' homework responsibilities.

The Oak Hill Faculty encourages all students to have a study partner in each class who can share work that is missed because of illness or special program participation.  If absence form school is for more than two days and homework cannot be obtained from another student, parents may call the school office after the second day and request assignments.  Parents are asked to telephone by 10:00 a.m. and work can be picked up after 2:00 p. m.

Homework Tips

1.  Set aside a specific time in which to do assignments.

2.  Choose a quiet, private place free from excessive noise, interruptions and other distractions.

3.  The study area should be well lighted and well equipped with pens, paper, ruler, dictionary, atlas, etc.

4.  Organize.  Successful study depends on an efficient use of time which requires organization.  Use an assignment book to help you organize your work.

5.  Carefully check the completed assignments.
